Welcome

The estate

Domaine Les Béates is located in the Provençal village of Lambesc, in the heart of the « Appellation d’Origine Protégée Coteaux-d’Aix-en-Provence ». In the 17th century, a « béate » was an educated lady who teachs children to read and write but also the bases of catechism. Quiet widespread in the hinterland villages at the 19th century they had a very important social role, before disappearing slowly in the 20th century and leaving only its name to the domaine.

Terroir and philosophy

Pionneer of organic farming in the region since the 80’s, the domaine is owned by the Terrat Familly since 1996 with a true will of producing outstanding wines in the respect for the living and the environnement. Old vines, low yield, traditional vinification and long ageing were the key to be able to capture the great concentration this terroir could give.

Beeing certified in organic farming means no use of herbicide or chemical mineral fertilier. Working the soil gently and using organic compost allows the vines to devellop their roots deep in the soil to resist the water stress in summer, it also helps to express the terroir and confer minerality and complexity to the wines. At the crossroad of Luberon, Alpilles and Montagne Sainte-Victoire, the estate streches its 40 hectares on a great diversity of soils. A mix of limestone, sandstone, clay, marls and stony soil in the sunny and dry Mediterranean climate that has seen olive trees and vineyards grow since thousands of years.

A great diversity of varieties

The domaine is divided in more than 60 plots spreaded on the foothills of the « Chaine des Côtes », a great diversity of terroirs, that allows a great diversity of grape varieties.

From native Grenache or Carignan, to Cabernet Sauvignon, particularity of the Appellation, 15 varieties are cultivativated on the Domaine.
Under the direction of Pierre-François Terrat, forgottent varieties such as Counoise or grapes from other regions like Chenin Blanc, that would adapt to the terroir, has been planted. Very attached to the traditions he is also constantly questionning himself to find the right balance in the wines and adapt the domain to the climate change.

Ugni Blanc, Vermentino, Grenache Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Clairette, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc for whites.
Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Counoise, Carignan, Mourvedre, Caladoc, Cabernet Franc for rosés and reds.

The wines

The domaine produces a full range of white, rosé and red wines. Blend of grapes, blend of plots, single vineyards… the production is divided in three main ranges. Béatines (white, rosé and red) : fruit-driven wines, fresh, delicate and ready to drink. Aged for 9 months in steel tanks. Béates (white and red) : concentration, complexity, soft texture and great ageing potential. Aged for 9 months in oak barrels and foudre and 9 months in steel tanks.
Terra d’Or (white, rosé and red) : single vineyards, atypical wine, density and complexity, exceptionnal ageing potential. Aged 18 months in oak barrels Lately the new range « LOU » has been created to be able to focus on research and experimentation over one grape variety, a winemaking technic or a particular type of aging. It would represent the « feeling » of the vintage and help the winemaker to keep learning about the possibilities of evolution.
